Platelet-rich Fibrin Membrane Combined with Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate for Treatment of Infrabony Defects in Chronic Periodontitis: A Case Series

It has been reported that platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membranes contain numerous platelets and angiogenic growth factors. These findings suggested that PRF membranes exhibit the characteristics of a promising therapeutic grafting material for the treatment of periodontal osseous defects. PRF membranes were prepared from blood collected from patients. Osseous defects in subjects diagnosed with periodontitis were treated using a combination of PRF membranes and a beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) grafting material.

Retrospective 10 year Analysis of Implant Survival and Complications in a Suburban Australian General Dental Practice

To assess the 10 year complication/failure rates for dental implants in general practice. Materials and Methods: The study is a retrospective analysis of radiographs and clinical records for implant patients, who gave written consent. The data recorded included implant type, position, prosthetic structure, abutment fit, fixation, complications, loss, periodontal charting and medical histories. Results: 68 patients (165 implants): Total survival rates (91.5% 5yr; 72.1% 10yr). Periodontitis survival rates (90.6% 5yr; 61.8% 10yr), Non-periodontitis rates (92.8% 5yr, 82.4% 10yr; 10yr Odds Ratio (OR) 2.8, p<.02). Periodontitis patients had greater bone loss compared with non-periodontitis subjects (OR: 2.7, p<.02 5yr; 11.1, p<.0001 10yr).

Evaluation of the Morphology of Palatal Rugae in Libyan School Children

Palatal Rugae (PR) are asymmetric bilateral elevations of variable prominence on the roof of the hard palate. They are present from birth in the anterior region of the palatal mucosa behind the incisive papilla and bilateral to the medial palatal raphe. PR takes various configurations and their design and structure, like fingerprints, are unique to each individual.There are between three and five PR bilaterally, and none of these crosses the midline raphe. The physiological functions of PR include a role in swallowing and enhancement of the association between food and taste receptors on the dorsal surface of the tongue. PR also assists speech and suction in children.

Causal Relationship between Occlusal Factors and Temporomandibular Disorders

This review evaluated the possible role of some occlusal factors in the etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Only a few occlusal factors have been implicated in causing TMDs, among which occlusal interferences in the retruded contact position (RCP) and RCP-intercuspal position (ICP) did not appear to have causal roles. In contrast, the role of occlusal discrepancies between habitual occlusal position and bite plate-induced occlusal position on the etiology of TMDs was promising, and thus, the follow-up studies should be performed.
