Escherichia coli is the pathogen most commonly associated with infections after transrectal ultrasonography-guided prostate biopsy, and the prevalence of fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli is increasing. This study prospectively analyzed stool cultures, determined the presence of fluoroquinolone-sensitive (i.e., normal) and resistant E. coli, administered appropriate prophylactic antibiotics accordingly, and analyzed the rates of infectious complications following transrectal ultrasonography-guided prostate biopsy.
