Safety and Security in Limited Medical Laboratories in Alexandria: Technicians’ Point Of View

Published on: 2019-03-25

Introduction: Methods: Chemical accidents can be prevented in the laboratory by the practice of safety and security culture. This is a cross-sectional study for knowledge and attitude conducted among 70 laboratory technicians and chemists from 46 licensed limited laboratories registered in the Ministry of Health and Population in Alexandria Governorate during 2018. Results: The studied sample showed correct knowledge about safety and security, gained during their basic study in the colleges. Most of them did not receive any additional training. Only 14.3% are wishful for applying the steps of safety and security during the routine work in the lab. This non-compliance was attributed to environmental conditions, limited availability of safety equipment’s, cultural beliefs and limited number of assistants. The attitudes of the studied sample showed shortage in the availability of all requirements for safety and security in the labs, 62.9% were exposed to variable types of chemical injuries, and 82.9% declared careless administration about the safety and security. Conclusion: Laboratory workers have the basic knowledge with the least practice for safety and security.
