Pros and Cons of Long-Term Use of Nicotine Replacement Therapies: A Qualitative Study

In the last decade, harm reduction has been increasingly suggested as a method to reduce the harm caused by smoking in smokers who are unable or unwilling to quit all nicotine products. One of these methods includes long-term substitution of tobacco with nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs). The aim of this study is therefore to gain insight into the perceived pros and cons of the long-term use of NRTs. We conducted 19 semi-structured interviews with long-term users of NRTs, 16 ex-smokers and 3 dual users of tobacco and NRTs.

Alcohol Consumption and Suicide Trends in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine

The Slavic countries of the former Soviet Union Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine retain one of the highest suicide rates in the world, despite a gradual decline over the past decade. The reason of high suicide mortality in fSU countries is not fully understood. A number of variables, including socioeconomic factors, religious and biological background should be considered. The developments in suicide mortality in fSU countries have been particularly dramatic in connection with the societal processes of the last decades including the period of reforms known as “perestroika” and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Survey of Treatment Preferences for Opioid Use Disorder

This study gathered preliminary information on the initial feasibility of using injection Naltrexone (NTX)
therapy in opioid users. One hundred opioid users (36% female, 8% minorities, mean age 34.5+11.4 yrs.) undergoing a health screen to determine initial eligibility for an ongoing study completed the survey.

An estimate of the abuse potential of analgesic opioid drugs by adult non cancer patients – a mini review

Data obtained from this review suggest that the abuse potential of opioid drugs is greatly over estimated and few if any adult patients without mental problems or a history of drug misuse will become addicted to therapeutically prescribed opioid drugs or might die of an overdose. Thus, physicians should continue to prescribe these drugs if deemed medically necessary.
